Love is like underwear…

I am having fun imagining what is going through your minds as you read this title! Some of you are smiling, some are confused and some are going places you ought not be going!

My son and daughter-in-law own and operate a Crossfit gym. (by the way, I highly recommend their gym. They are professional, encouraging and they really are good at what they do!)Check em out! I have been training there for 4 months. Something happened a couple of weeks ago that has never happened to me before. There’s a first time for everything, as they say.

There were about 8 of us working out one morning. Chris was going over the workout of the day with us. It was a very cool morning and everyone had their hoodies and long workout pants on. I tend to work up a sweat fairly easy so I wear gym shorts underneath my warmup pants and I take my warmup pants off just before starting the workout. Most of our workouts have a time limit and we were right before starting the workout.

I pulled my long pants off real quick and suddenly my daughter-in-law, Stephanie, shouted: “Poppa, you just have your underwear on!” Now since I was wearing boxers no one even noticed, including myself, until Stephanie brought it to everyone’s attention! That’s when heads turned and everyone began to laugh!

I had my gym shorts on underneath my warmup pants but in my hurry to take them off, I pulled both pants off. We all had a good laugh and still laugh about it, BUT, had I not been wearing underwear, I could have wounded people…DEEPLY! 🙂

So now you can begin to see where I am going with the title of today’s blog. I am currently studying Colossians. Chapter 3:12-14 talks about how we are to clothe ourselves. Here is what those verses say:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

I like to read many different translations when I am studying scripture. The Message is one of the translations I like to look at because it reads like most of us talk in our society.

Verse 14 in The Message says, “And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic all-purpose garment. Never be without it.”

So now you see how my twisted mind works! 🙂

Love is like underwear…never be without it!

Had I not been wearing underwear that day when the unexpected happened, people could have been hurt!

Love covers (no pun intended) a multitude of sins. Sorry, I just can’t help myself!

Look at 1 Peter 4:8 in the Amplified Bible translation (AMPC):

“Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others].”

Disregards the offenses of others. You see, my analogy just keeps getting better!!

Chris and Steph’s gym has a very loving and encouraging atmosphere. I love everyone there and care about them. I believe the feelings are mutual. It has to be, because my little careless disrobing antic didn’t offend anyone! I was forgiven and my potential offense was disregarded! Had we not loved each other, ie, no underwear, things could have gone north real quick. 🙂

Life is full of unexpected events. Some are not so pleasant and have the potential of ruining your day or even your life. Christ-like love will ensure we handle all events in a Christ-like manner. Having the true love of the Creator of the universe, the Bread of Life, our Savior, living inside us, equips us to face anything that life throws our way. Good or bad!

Three Characteristics of the kind of love that only Christ can fill you with:

Covers a multitude of sins

Forgives

Disregards the offense of others

Always, always, always clothe yourselves with the love of Christ!

I invite you to come workout with us sometime. It’s a safe place…really, it is! 🙂
