Are You Digging Your Own Grave?

I am not talking about putting your foot in your mouth. (although I have experience in that area as well) No, I am talking about a hole in the ground. Having others bury you after you die is one thing, but what about digging your own grave and then burying yourself alive? No thanks!

Of course I am speaking figuratively, thankfully 🙂  Today’s blog title might also read, “Are You Digging Your Own Prison?” Grave, prison…neither one sounds very promising.

Back in biblical times, people would dig their own cisterns. Cistern is a tank, vessel, or anything built to contain water or anything else you want to store.

So what does a cistern have to do with a grave or a prison? Stay with me and keep reading!

I want to share two verses from the Bible that could be life changing for you in 2016!

Jeremiah 2:13 “For my people have done two evil things: they have abandoned me, the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!”

The “fountain of living water” is used figuratively here to mean, the source of flowing refreshment or the source of reviving refreshment.

Too many times in my life I have put too much faith in my own abilities. I have put my hopes and dreams in my abilities.

Have you ever thought, if I could just get this job or job promotion all my problems would go away? If I get this new car or new house, life will be better? If I could just find Mr. or Miss Right, my life would be perfect? If I can just get drunk or high tonight, I will forget about my problems and maybe when I wake up in the morning life will be better.

Remember the old song from the movie, Urban Cowboy? Lookin’ For Love In All The Wrong Places. We can turn our backs on the fountain of living waters and look for joy and contentment in all the wrong places. We like to dig our own cisterns! BUT,

Digging your own cisterns is stupid:

  1. We have limitations so the cistern we dig can only be so big
  2. No matter how careful you are, your cistern will leak
  3. By building your own cistern, you are turning your back on an infinite flow of joy!

****Oh, and get this, back in biblical times, empty cisterns were used as prisons!

So after your “stuff” has all leaked out of your self-dug cistern, your hopes and dreams are left there…in a prison!

A grave is a prison, but, there is someone who can perform the prison break of all prison breaks! His name is Jesus.

OK, this SOUNDS good…but how do I keep from turning my back on the fountain of living water?

By applying Luke 9:23-24 to you life…everyday!

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”

Deny yourselves = surrender = let Jesus lead = throw your shovels away and stop digging your own cisterns = Turn all decisions over to the Lord and seek His answers in prayer and by hanging out with mature believers

Take up your cross daily = embrace your sufferings, trials, rough spots. This is where Jesus teaches us

Follow me = obedience = do what Jesus did

Save their life will lose it = putting stuff in self-dug leaky cisterns

loses their life for me will save it = turn to the fountain of living water and find infinite joy and contentment.

In 2016 I want to be more free than I’ve ever been.

It is time for a Prison Break!

Is it not just like our all-knowing, powerful, gracious God to lead us to surrender in order to be set free!!
